It takes time

The week that we moved into our new home, Mr. 58 spent a morning planting daffodil bulbs for me. At the time, the sold sign was still in the yard... I wasn't really able to appreciate the sweet act he was doing for me.... Now I can.

He is always so good about planning ahead and planting at the right time. I am not that patient and I just never seem to have the time. Every spring I see other people's flower beds filled with the gorgeous splash of yellow and say to myself, "I sure wish I had thought to plant bulbs last fall."

Being a good gardner like Dad requires time. It takes time to make plans, to get the beds ready, to purchase just the right plants, to plant them, and that is just the beginning....Dad loves checking on his gardens... he is a great gardener... and his gardens love him!

Speaking of TIME... Have you noticed a decorating trend lately? Lots and lots of clocks, clock faces, watch faces, and anything relating to clocks. We have a huge black one over the mantel in the booth right now.

We made these unique clock faces recently. Keep your eyes open... you'll see lots too.

This Monday, I want to highlight two wonderful people... Rick and Deana Pennington.

Since we moved booths, they became our new "neighbors" at the bottom of the stairs. They also have a great booth upstairs - check out that booth with the windows - "Years Gone By". A fun selection of treasures.

My kids love this Donald clock they see in R and D's booth when we are "fluffing" Booth 58 together.

Most weekends you can find this energitic couple working long hard days at ACM. Deana graciously camps out behind the register, greeting each and every customer with a beautiful smile and a "We thank you, Honey." or "Have a wonderful day, Sugar." I don't know how she keeps it up hour after hour, but she does it so well.

Rick rewired this lamp... Ready to go home with you!

Rick adds fun to work days! He loves to tease with the best of us, but at the same time, he works like no one else. He knows every inch of that mall. Mr. and Mrs. 58 and I always enjoy spending our work days with them. Lots of fun.

A Wee Bit of Green

We've been adding little tucks of green to Booth 58. Found these realistic tiny potted plants.... Mom added burlap to some to make it "us."

I've been reluctant to add fake greenary to my new home... But last week I set myself free from that Home Decor "Do's and Don'ts" List. Now there are a few little spots of green gracing the corners at home.

Hubby even noticed and commented on the new life.... "Makes our home feel more cozy."

We have some serious Booth Envy.

You know who I am talking about... Nancy Schwalls from Uncommon Goods.... some know her as "Colorado Nancy." A sweet down to earth lady. We've enjoyed getting to know her and now being her "back booth neighbor."

You can find her booth in the front of the store directly across from the cash register. At the moment she has a whole tree growing in there... bursting with springtime buds. That tree is what pushed Mrs. 58 and me over into the Envy category... It is super cool!

She also has a booth at the top of the front stairs ... always packed with cool stuff.

Nancy recently had some business cards printed and I spotted them in her booth. Her slogan/tag line for her business made me laugh out loud..."rusty, crusty, and dusty collector"

Isn't that great? Great summary of her collections!

Buyers Beware

A springtime favorite in our booth right now.... Mom threw this burlap wreath together on Sunday afternoon... It almost didn't make it to the Mall... It almost ended up on MY front door instead!

Those of you that know my mom, know that she has many gifts and talents... She is super creative. She is a natural encourager. And she loves to give gifts! My kids know that she always has a treat in her purse for them. Her friends receive little gifts wrapped up in pretty little ways. And those of us in her family know her generousity the best.

When working on Booth 58 stuff, if I say "Ooo, I like that.. or "That is so cute!" she always responds with... "Do you want it? It would look great in your house!" BUT I try to restrain myself and let most things make it to the Booth... Like this wreath.

Buyers beware: If no one snatches this cutie pie up quick, Mom will get in her gifting mood, it will be mine. Hurry! She just can't help herself!

We spent Saturday at the Mall working.... It is always fun to hang out with ACM folks and get to help some of our great customers.

A little peek in Booth 58...We just added lots of touches of spring.

Lots of new sights around Antique Company these days. I thought you might like to see some of the newer booths ....

Whitney from The Patina Next in the back left .... She moved from upstairs recently. Great repurposed antiques and beautiful furniture. She's done a great job with her space.

My sweet friend Melanie most recently joined the ACM vendor list. You can find her cool corner upstairs at the end of an aisle... actually in Booth 58's first booth! Don't forget to explore upstairs... lots of neat stuff up there.

And speaking of Booth 58's old spots.... Go check out what Darla has done in the back corner that we used to call home. She has beautiful things. Lots of architectural pieces. Her booth was hopping on Saturday!

Lots of new things happening at Antique Company Mall in 2012!

The vendors recently gathered to talk about the exciting things that are on the horizon.

Cindy from Junque Art will be creating a website for ACM! You will also be able to follow us on Twitter and Facebook to be updated on all the latest happenings. Cindy hopes to include links to fellow ACM bloggers.

We've been working hard in Booth 58 to take the old out and bring in some new. We've started using these fun price tags. We added Happpy Hearts Day goodies...including lots of paper crafts that will be sure to win the heart of your Valentine.

There has been lots of moving around within the walls of the mall over the past month. It is fun to see things "shake up" and yet still feel like "home". Come in to see what is new... and some of the old things that we all still love about our Antique Company!

Have lots of shopping to do still? Don't want to get in and out on this cold wet day? Antique Company Mall in McKinney is just the spot for you! You only have to get out in the rain once... and enter into our 'junkin' paradise'! Shoppers have been known to spend hours with us.

Lots of Moving at the Mall this Monday. Moving booths around seem to cause a domino affect in the ACM. When one person moves, it seems like lots happens. Come by and see everyone's new looks!

Moving Day... Our Christmas Miracle

Wednesday morning, Diane called me to tell us that our new booth would be vacant by Thursday afternoon. Our original moving day was planned for December 15th.... two weeks from now.... But why wait? We are officially moved in as of tonight! Mr. 58's power tools are worn out from tearing down our cluttered corner and then rebuilding the new front booth. Mrs. 58 and I were busy fluffing and re-fluffin' --- it really was so much fun. Dolorous was working yesterday and she told me about the red grocery cart in the back room. I've seen that old thing hundreds of times and always wondered, "Who ever uses that?"

Boy did it come in handy! We piled it full about 6 times, pushed it up the ramp to the front of the store, and unpacked it. Our cluttered corner quickly moved and became our cluttered heap. It is unbelieveable that we fit all of that in that little bitty booth. Several dealer friends came by and said, "You brought a lot of new stuff in, right?" Nope... not a bit of new stuff.... It all multiplied! It was a Christmas Miracle!

Look at our piles and piles... All a bit overwhelming to me, but Mrs. 58 just kept saying, "No big deal! We can do it. This is wonderful."

Whew! What a whirlwind! We ended our crazy two days with dinner at Spoons tonight.. capping it all off with cupcakes for our little ones.

As we headed over to dinner, we stopped to look back through the store window. You can see our booth from the street! So cool. Mom and I squealed a couple of times when we saw that.

Inspiration

On Sunday, Mom and I strolled through some of the shops downtown while Hubby and Mr. 58 stayed outside with the kids. We treated ourselves to some "eye candy" in Gray Living, The Smitten Flea, and Bloom and loved every minute of it. Now that we are busy with Booth 58, we don't get to browse like we used to.

I hope to take some inspiration from Gray Living's upstairs bedroom displays for my own bedroom. That store is incredible. Inspiration in every corner... and also enjoyed this article from Dallas Magazine.

The Smitten Flea had a great sparkling of seasonal cheer, along with Lady Butterbug's Annie Sloan chalk paint... another "to do" on my list - I'm planning on painting some furniture I inherited from my grandmother soon. Still trying to decide on just the right look. The Flea had samples of the finished products for all the colors. Great to see in person.

And Bloom... A beautiful fashion portfollio. I have been following Kendi's blog for a while... fun to see what is "in" in the fashion world too... and she is just as cute as can be. I love how Kendi mixes the old with the new. Thirfting is one of her favorite ways to find treasures for her personal clothing collections. I can kind of relate with her...kind of like "junkin" for our Booth 58 treasures!

No Cyber Monday specials for Antique Company Mall today. Sorry, folks... just the old fashion kind of deals around here! It was a great weekend at the Mall. We are officially in the swing of the season now. Mrs. 58 is busy cranking out more handmade goodies to fill in the holes left after Black Friday.

Enjoyed a chilly Dickens of a Christmas last night on the Square. We bundled everyone up, pulled out the double stroller, and did some quick strolling. Big Brother found the toboggan hill to be a favorite...

The ice skating rink was interesting.... we were amazed that you could "ice skate" on a plastic pond. The kids still begged us to do it... It was all about the ambiance!

On the hour, every hour, it "snowed" on the Square. We were there to catch the last "snowfall" of the weekend. You would have thought that we had won the lottery! My kids ran through the snow bubbles (with their mouths wide open) like crazy people. I had a lady who was working the event, come ask me if they were my kids. She was concerned that they were ingesting too much of the foam they were using to make the snow flakes. On the way home, my sweet little girl asked me why snow tastes like bubble bath. Poor Texas baby!

It's all about the smalls.

Smalls... That's what we call the small things we sell... Not furniture or big ticket items... Just the fun little stuff that sits around and makes things pretty.... it all adds character.

Notice my fave pick from a few weekends ago... the vintage cocktail shaker... never seen one of those.

Smalls is what we sell the most of. It's fun to go junkin and find these little treasures and then see them go to happy new homes. This month, I had fun picking up lots of new ones for the booth... cleaned them up in my kitchen, tagged them, and then put them in the booth right away. Most of these pictured have already sold! That's the fun part!

Happy Turkey Day to you all. There are lots of big things to be thankful for this year... but the small things are the things mean the most... right? Today, I'm thankful for 6 little feet that I can hear pitter patter upstairs, 3 new trees that a special someone planted outside my window, and 1 pretty turkey mug that holds my coffee right now. God is good all the time.

What "smalls" are you most grateful for this Thanksgiving? Don't overlook them!

Dickens of a Christmas

Don't fight the crazy crowds this coming weekend... Who wants to really spend their holiday weekend with everyone else in lines? I have a better idea for you....Downtown McKinney!

Next weekend is the annual Dickens of a Christmas on the Square.

I can't think of a better way to kick of your Christmas season. There will be horse-drawn carriages, strolling carolers, visits with Santa Claus, the Christmas tree lighting ceremony and activities for all ages. We always make it a priority to make our way downtown for this fun weekend. My kids love the live reindeer, the carosel, and the petting zoo. Bundle up and come see what McKinney has to offer!

Elves at Work

The Booth 58 elves have been busy. Mom and I spent an afternoon crafting last week. As we approach our moving day, we are trying to keep our inventory stocked with new Christmas items.

We had a fun day brainstorming ideas that kept our hands busy. We always have big plans and there just never seems to be enough time in our days. That afternoon, carpool time crept up on me right about the same time that I was elbows deep in silver glitter. Mom stayed with our napping "elves", I picked up Big Brother, and then returned to crank out a few more bedazzled goodies... all before dinner time.

We use a ton of shipping tags in Booth 58. We were excited to find a large stash of them at a local office supply store... they are becoming harder to find these days as "snail mail" becomes less and less popular. We die them with walnut ink. Mr. 58 even made us this batch of ink... from real black walnuts he found in McKinney!

I made chalkboard tags for Christmas packages. Each set comes with 3-4 various sized tags strung with bakers twine and a piece of chalk for labeling your gifts. They turned out so cute, I might just have to make myself a set!

We have a few more treats in the process of being created. If we could just add a few more hours in the day, that would be great!

Shakin' It Up

A funny thing we've noticed lately: Moving things around helps sales.

Many times we've moved an "older" piece of inventory around and then it quickly sells. It's kind of like cleaning out your closet or pantry... When you move things around, you notice a lot you weren't seeing on a daily basis. Mom calls it "Shakin' It Up." Makin' things fresh and new... even though it is the same old stuff!

(By the way: We have a goal to bring in at least 40 new items every 10 days... for you repeat customers... We know you like to see new stuff! Keep coming back to see what we've added!)

Speaking of Moving Things... BOOTH 58 IS MOVING!!!

On Dec. 15th, we will be moving our booth to the front of the store. Look for us on the right side, toward the front window. We plan to bring our "famous" white picket fence,our old header, and our green shutters. Mr. 58 already has "blueprints" for the new area... Lots of cool plans in the works.

We are excited that our space will be doubling and we will be able to bring more furniture in now. We've loved our time in our little cluttered corner, but we are really excited about this move! Come be one of our first visitors and finish your Christmas shopping with us.

He's Making His List

Lot's of Santa Sightings at the Antique Company Mall this Monday.

The left side of the mall has a great set of glass display cases. All kind of treasures can be found there... coins, magazines, china, and all sorts of collectibles. Some of them change out with the seasons... like this enormous Santa collection. We spotted some awesome vintage pieces recently.

Diane decorated one of her trees in the front window with cookie cutters... Creative! Perfect for a little touch in the kitchen... or for a centerpiece for a cookie exchange.

Constant

One more constant that we keep in the booth... Silver.

We like it dark and tarnished... not shiny and bright.... We like a good patina...Not a display like granny would do - (You know the one I'm talking about... All polished and displayed in the dining room or china cabinet) That is pretty, but, we'd rather it be tarnished and stuck in an old suitcase or wooden crate... with some pencils or scissors stowed in it. Not your ordinary use for silver... a little "off" - but "different" -right? We like "different" around here, friends!

Happy Candy Day!

My three little ones are super excited about today! We carved our Jack-O-Lantern last night (aka: Sam) and now we are counting down the hours until the trick or treating begins. Halloween through the eyes of a 6 and 3 year old is so great! They are both already making plans for their costumes next year.

On the other hand, those of us in the "reail world" are counting down the hours until Christmas already. Not my favorite part of selling... but you gotta go with the flow, I guess. As Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday, I hate having to rush past it. Mom and I spent Saturday morning taking out Halloween and putting in Christmas. We were a little slow to change the seasons... looks like most of the dealers beat us to it.

If you are up for Scare on the Square today, don't expect alot of spooky sightings inside the ACM... but there is still plenty of candy to go around.

Another Constant Seller

Our biggest seller .... empty frames. Yep, I said empty. The older, the better! We have found some jewels while out junkin'... and yet another hard thing to part with. I have a stash that I have collected over the years. Hubby has been sweet to put up with my quirky decorating .... "It's empty, Honey," he says... "I know... Isn't it beautiful?"

We have been Carolyn Brooks fans for a long time. We frequented her booths long before we were dealers here at Antique Company Mall.

Carolyn is one of the all time top sellers at the Mall. She sells a ton of stuff! AND this lady can sell ANYTHING! I'm telling you, we are always in awe.

A couple things about Carolyn that we love... her cool stuff... and her great prices! You can spend hours looking through her treasures. Everything is always presented so well. Carolyn always gives her husband, Kent, the credit for the staging. He has the "touch" apparently!

You can find Carolyn's corners in several places. Her downstairs booth is down the ramp, towards the back right side of the store. She also has a great space upstairs. Halloween is her favorite ... so come in and see what she has ready to buy!

Scare on the Square

Make plans to come up to Downtown McKinney for Scare on the Square. We've had our costumes ready to go... and we've been "practicing"... you know serious trick or treaters mean business!

Mom made this precious silloutte last week... We've decided it is our fave this season.

Our Baby Scarecrow, Ballerina, and Soldier hope to see you there. It is the best place to just sit and people watch... and get a nice stash of candy.

This picture is from several years ago... Makes me smile as I remember Sister's fairy costume. This year Little Mr. 58 will ride in the red wagon.... and hopefully we will have a cool snap again.

Insiders' Tip: Come early... Everything officially starts at 4:00...but it gets pretty crowded early... We try to be at the Square before 4- Then we beat the crowds and get home before dark to welcome the trick or treaters at our house.

We Give Thanks

Window Shopping

Even if you are just window shopping the ACM, you are in for a treat. Lots of "eye candy" to feast on in the front windows.

Walk in and look to your left and you will be in Diane's booth. Diane Haight and her husband Bill are the owners of Antique Company Mall. You can always find a variety in her large front booth. Great antiques and vintage items... She just told me about some 1960s turkey platters she snagged recently at a sale. I'm looking forward to seeing those.

It is always good to see Diane and Bill at the Mall. They have more than enough energy to keep the place running. Diane knows every corner of that store inside and out. Customers ask for a certain obscure item, and she can immediately tell them exactly where to find it. She is amazing!

Walk in and look to your right and you will be in Barbara Smith's window booth. In addition to her booths here, she also has an interior design business Dream Cottage Creations. Her clients are privileged to have her work her magic in their homes. I am always thrilled to see what she has put together in the store. She recently changed up the look in the window. It is always fun to see what she comes up with.

Side note: Blogger has been goofy on me lately... hasn't been allowing folks to comment. I think I might have fixed the glitch now. Hopefully I can take your comments now... SO, let us know what is happening at your Mall on this Monday.

Another Constant

Recently talked about chalkboards being a "constant" that we keep the booth stocked with. (Actually ran into an old friend at the mall and she said, "Oh, you're the booth with the chalkboards!")

Another "constant" reflects our own decorating tastes... Plates.

Mom has always embellished her home with dishes... some family heirloom pieces and lots of pretty pieces she has collected through the years. She's had various themes ... some walls with all one color ( brown transferware, ironstone, red transferware). Some corners with all one shape (platters, pitchers, dessert plates).

In my first college apartment, Mom helped me decorate my tiny bedroom... we hung several blue transferware plates on the walls... all coordiating with the denim comforter. The blue bedspread was trendy, but none of the other girls were decorating with grandma's old dishes in that season of life!

We've learned that colorful dishes are not big sellers. White dishes and plates are constants though. We try to round up a few plates, pitchers, and platters each time we restock.... if Mom and I can part with them! After snagging two ironstone pieces last weekend, I asked her what she was gonna price them for the booth. She answered, "These aren't going in the Booth... They are going in your house!" .

His and Hers

I've mentioned Nancy from Ella Elaine many times. She has such a knack for thinking outside the box. You never know what you will find in her booths. Everyone gravitates toward her look. Her first booth sits directly across from the cash register. It is a magnet for all shoppers.

Nancy has another booth in the mid-section of the store - tucked back in the right corner. You will know it when you see it... It is so "her"... always neutral tones... browns, creams, and rusts... Real rust, that is! Anything rusty turns into a work of art once Nancy gets her hands on it!

Many folks don't know that Mrs. Ella has a Mr. Ella. Nancy's husband, John, joined the vendor club this year and his booth is also a show stopper. His booth is located under the front stair case. He has a different look - mostly black, silver, grey, and whites. And, word has it that Mrs. Ella "fluffs" for Mr. Ella. He picks the stuff and she makes it pretty! They make a great team!

John and Nancy also have a fun side project they are working on here...."Restoring the future with a touch of the past" Great description!

Our Neighbors

Here we go again with Monday at the Mall. I'm still doing pretty good - 3 weeks is a good record - right?

Today, let's tour some of Booth 58's "neighbors" back in our cluttered corner of Antique Company Mall.

Cindy (we call her the "Plate Lady") is our neighbor. She has the coolest selection of dishes... all kinds- along with other great accessories for the home. Cute stuff! At first glance you might think that her booth is a "no-no" for little shoppers. BUT her booth is Sister's favorite because she also has a great selection of Beanie Babies! We always visit her animals.

Another Cindy calls our corner "home" too! Cindy Gilstrap's cheerful booth has a variety of vintage treasures. We also love her handmade goodies. I've purchased several for girlfriends. She creates cool stuff... check out her Junque Art in her Etsy shop.. or come see them in person.

Eileen is new to the "neighborhood." This summer she moved from one of the back rooms to our wall. What a sweet lady with sweet finds! Come see her well loved goods. She has done a great job setting up her booth.

Barbara and Angela have a cool display of fashion options back in our corner too. Barbara "resides" in the front right window of the mall also, and Angela has a great booth upstairs too. They joined efforts and added one more booth with an awesome clothing and jewelry selection. I always peruse through the frilly vintage style tops and dresses... and even bought one of Angela's handmade necklaces this summer. I wear it all the time... and get lots of compliments!

Wie geht's? (How are you?)

Mrs. 58 will be proud of me for including some German here... She has a minor in German. My brother and I both took German in high school... but unfortunately it didn't "stick" quite as well as it did with Mom. Another bit of trivia - Mr. and Mrs. 58 met in German class in high school... Cute....right?

Spent a little bit of time at ACM this morning adding some new treasures. I took a few pictures of the Munich Antique Fair out front on East Virginia. Visited with some dealer friends.... Seems like Oktoberfest is going really well.

Carolyn and Kent have some of their goodies outside today. They are set up next to Bill and Diane. It is fun to see everyone's stuff spread out in the sunshine... rust and all! Love it! Today, I noticed Carolyn is selling old fry baskets.. She can sell anything!

Pepper has a tent on the side of the street.... in the shade this morning! She has some great stuff. We are always amazed at how much she fits into her booth inside. Looks pretty in the daylight too.

Cindy from "Old Friends" in the mall has a tent up today. Her daughter has included some incredible jewelry too... and Cindy has some beautiful fall clothes too.

Lots to do and see. Beth from On the Square has a great list of all the festivities and their locations.

Some things that caught my eye:

Lousiana Street will have lots going on. The petting zoo and weenie dog races will be a favorite of our gang.

Local Yocal Farm to Market will have a Root Bier Garden and will be serving organic sausage and Bratwursts. Sounds fun for the kids.

The Pantry Restaurant will have a special menu available with brats, sausages, German potato salad, sauerkraut cake and pie. Now, that sounds interesting!! Anyone want to meet for a piece of sauerkraut pie? I might stick to the chocolate cream pie.. but I bet Mr. 58 will try it!

One of our Constants

One of Booth 58's "constants"or "standbys" is chalkboards. We always have several in our corner. Mr. 58 does an awesome job of keeping them coming! Our first sell in our upstairs booth, many moons ago, was a red chalkboard. Mom and I had just finished setting up our little bitty inventory for the first time....We were new to this whole thing. We had no idea what we were doing...so we were proud of this first accomplishment: " The red chalkboard just makes it all come together!"

A lady immediatly walked over to the chalkboard and picked it up. I thought I might just cry right then. Mom reminded me that we want to sell things. It isn't just about staging a cute vignette. If you are attached to something, keep it for yourself (like this scale... I don't think I can part with it yet!)

Mrs. 58 has struck up many a conversation with new friends while "fluffing." Recently, a young lady mentioned that she has always loved our chalkboards, but she wasn't real sure what to do with one in her house.

Some of our thoughts.... menus, grocery lists, kids rooms, love notes, fun quotes....I keep one in my kitchen with verses that I want to keep at the front of my mind in the middle of my busy days.

Monday at the Mall

Make plans to come to Oktoberfest this weekend in Downtown McKinney. The Antique Company Mall will have a sidewalk/street sale again. Vendors will be bringing out their treasures to the street. We all plan to have great deals for you... some fall sales throughout the Mall and outside too.

We loved the festival last year. The petting zoo and the train were favorites. We also loved the bands and food!

The Mall was crowded this weekend. Great to get to chat to lots of customers. Mom was making deals left and right... "Tell me what you like... I will make you a deal!" Lots of folks took us up on the offer and took home some great stuff.

Everyone Could Use One More Junk Drawer

Two of my sweet friends recently moved into new homes. I wanted to give them something unique as housewarming gifts... Something that only their "Junkin' Sister" would come up with... more "junk!"

I found these sewing machine drawers recently....

Filled them with new kitchen towels

Tied them up with some cellaphane wrap and a pretty bow

Embellished them with a button tag

Scribbled out a "Happy Home" note

No matter how wonderful a new home is, everyone can always use one more JUNK DRAWER!

One of them is now being used as a note cadddy in the kitchen

It is always fun to repurpose some old "junk" and make it useful again.

Other ideas for a sewing drawer? remote holder, recipe box, hand towels for the bath, or a magazine/book caddy.... Lots of ideas! Can you think of any more?

Monday at the Mall

Carolyn Brooks brought out her Halloween goodies this past weekend. (she has the large booth at the back right side of the store... and another one upstairs) Lots of great orange and black... Love that stack of orange vintage books leaning under the black chair.

The Rules - Part 2

Started filling you in on Dad's garage sale rules on my last post. I will wrap them up today.

A backseat view of Mr. and Mrs. 58 early on Saturday morning. She "navigates" well.

When many men were welcoming the opening of dove season this weekend, Mr. 58 was doing some hunting of his own. So much fun to go junkin' with him... He has learned the ropes quite quickly over the last couple of years. I remember hearing him say, "I just don't get it" while Mom and I scooped up cool finds and he just stood back carrying all of our treasures. Now, we all split up, and he comes back with just as much loot as we do! Way to go, Daddy... You are "getting it" now!

Rule #4 - Be quick and decisive
"If you touch it, it's yours."
Garage Salers are quick little folks... kind of like a flock of hungry buzzards... when they see something that looks good, someone's gonna swoop in and grab it. If you see it and it is a possible jewel, GRAB IT! Pick it up! Don't stand there looking at it just thinkin' about it.. One of those buzzards is gonna grab it... CLAIM IT!

I had an old buzzard "circling" me at the flea market where I grabbed this. I think he was waiting for me to put it down..No Way, Buddy! He kept talking to me about it... asking me where I found it. Dad, said it was funny to watch me grip the old rusty scale under my arm... ready to fight the old guy off!

Rule #5 - Always try to make a better deal
"It doesn't hurt to try."

I've learned alot about wheelin' and dealin' since Booth 58's birth. It usually pays off to ask for a better deal... and a few kind words with a pretty smile usually work to our advantage too. Can't tell you how many times I've heard, "Oh you can have that, Honey." Now, that's a better deal!

Rule #6 - This is a rule that I'm adding... Empty car seats are best!

They are much quieter filled with junkin' treasures than my other little treasures... my babies! On Saturday, Hubby watched the 3 sweeties so that Mom and Dad and I could hunt. We love our entorage, but some things are just done better without all that "help."

The Rules - Part 1

According to Mr. 58, there are garage sale rules. I treasure hunted with him two mornings this weekend. On Friday, Mom watched my little sweeties so that Dad and I could venture out alone and that's when I began to get "schooled" in Garage Sales 101.

#1 Hit the road early
"All the good stuff will be gone!"
With our coffee cups in hand, we were bumping down the road in the Big Red Truck bright and early. Mr. 58 would have preferred earlier, but I couldn't get the ol' cobwebs dusted out quick enough.

#2 Know your route
"Don't back track. It wastes time."
Dad researches the sales the night before and has a plan before he pulls out of the drive way. If he sees a new sign pop up along the planned route, he says, "Stop now... Don't waste time and try to come back to it later. Back tracking wastes good huntin' time."

#3 Play the numbers game
"It's all a big numbers game. The more sales you hit, the more likely you will find treasures."
We try to hit as many sales as possible each day. Don't get discouraged after a few bum sales... keep going! Miss Mustard Seed helped us coin a phrase - "drive bys"(yard sales that aren't worth getting out of the car for). We had several of those too. Dad has a harder time judging the sale from the street and he wanted to stop at more than I did. I stayed in the truck for a few and let him go scout it out. I was right... they should have been "drive bys" - There we go again, Dad... wastin' good huntin' time. Dad, I'm a quick learner....You know me, always an "A" student..... You should have trusted your student!

Pumpkins and Pencils

We moved the pumpkins in.... next to the back to school pencils. Pumpkins and pencils look good together, we've decided. We made our Sept 1st deadline...Actually had it done August 30. We think we might be the first in the store to have Halloween out!

This beach sign waited to be moved into someone's booth, on the loading dock... At the same time, our pumpkins were waiting their entrance too. Funny sight. The beach sign seemed more appropriate as we fluffed our warm corner. Mom found a neighbor's little plug-in fan to borrow while we hung our new fall merchandise. Some of our fellow vendors teased us and said that it was already feeling cooler in our booth, since we moved the fall in!

Wishful Thinking

It's almost here! Fall is around the corner. Us Texans couldn't be more ready. We've had a chalkboard in up saying, "So Long Summer" for a while now. Customers chuckle when they read that and sometimes remark "Oh, really?" Wishful thinking...right?

Booth 58 will welcome the season very soon... Cooler weather can't come quick enough. We'll just pretend for a while.

Take a Number

A cool trend that has been around for a bit now... Numbers!

Booth 58 has been "numberized" from the beginning. Mom added some 1,2,3's to several items recently.... We are always loving the look of a bold numeral.

I painted this "58" on this little end table.

Remember these number plaques from last year? Mr. 58's first attempt at numbers. He's made more. Come "take a number!" I took a "5" yesterday to add to my collection. If this little coat hook doesn't sell soon, it might find a new home here with our three little coats hung on it!

A Blogging Backseat

Our blog has taken a backseat to life lately. I used to post regularly on another personal blog... years ago - now it seems. Friends frequently say "I sure miss reading your blog, " or they ask, "Why don't you blog anymore?" I quickly answer... "Life happened."

Computer time is now a precious commodity to me... as a busy wife, mom, daughter, and friend. Some days my laptop screen may not even see the light of day. As I sit typing now, my 6 year old plays a video game, my 3 year old naps, and I was just informed that the baby is now "crawling over to you, Mom."

I have refrained from becoming "friends" with any of you in FaceBook. I am one of the three remaining people in the universe that has not taken the FB plunge yet. I know myself too well.... It will become a thorn in my side if I open an account. Maybe someday... but for now, I will just have to be "friends" the old fashioned way... through email!

I enjoy writing here.... letting you all know about the fun that we are having in Booth 58. But there are times when Blogger might feel neglected....due to unforeseen ER visits, broken air conditioners, another ear infection, and just an overall tired mama. I'll be back... Just be patient.

Hooray, Hooray, School Started Yesterday!

We started school yesterday. 1st grade is so different from kindergarten. The backpack fits a bit better this year, the tennis shoes now have shoe strings instead of velcro, and Mama didn't shed a tear as we walked away from the classroom Monday morning.

Summer was fun... but long and hot here in Texas. There are only so many things to do at home, inside with the air conditioner, on these 108 degree days with three kiddos. After a year of kindergarten, Big Brother was used to exciting things happening everyday... Not so much here... Mama was just not the entertainer that kinder teacher Mrs. L was. We heard "I'm bored" more times that once.

A couple times I decided that I would venture to the Antique Mall to check on the booth... with all three kids. What was I thinking? My first mistake was to do this without a stroller. Big Brother was to hold Sister's hand while we crossed the street to get to the door... that went fine. BUT then when we entered the store, she decided that she was big enough to walk "all by myself." (I hear that more times than once too).

We made it back to our corner just fine. One step into Booth 58 and I knew my quick trip to "check the booth" needed to be more of a complete overhaul and "refluffing trip." Stuff was everywhere! The beach/patriotic themes had all been mixed... and what looked like another vendor's large racoon trap had found it's way to the center of our floor -- No, not a racoon... just the trap. Dishes had been moved around and stacked on the floor. A large print we had gracefully "hidden" in back corner under a table was now "front and center" on display. Lots needed to be fixed.

About the time that I had mentally registered the mess around me, my sweet girl also registered that her favorite stool was missing. How dare someone actually buy something and take it out of the booth! She proceeded into full melt down mode... right there on the floor next to the stacks of dishes. Big Brother wasn't much help as all he wanted to do was leave. I was stuck holding the baby in one hand and a large rusty varmit trap in other.... Now what?

I put the trap back down where I had found it, picked up my tramatized little princess, and issued the command to all within earshot... "We're leaving now!" big Brother remarked, "Mom, we just got here."... I answered, "Exactly."

And that is about how most of my summer has gone. So, you see now why the first day of school was a sweet day for me. Don't get me wrong, I adore my children and the times we get to spend together are blessings. But, now I know what my mom was talking about when she used to say, "Hooray, Hooray! School starts today!"

Paper airplanes ... Just for little boys?

Been to Booth 58 lately? Check out our travel theme. Mr. 58 helped us make a string of paper airplanes... made out of road maps. See 'em hanging from the ceiling?

A gentleman was shopping when we were hanging them. He warned us that the planes would be awfullly tempting to any little boys coming through the mall. Then he admitted that they were even tempting to him..... a grown-up little boy. We'll see how long they last! They may have already had a crash landing.

Girlfriends

Girlfriends.....We're in it together!

Love this quote and design from Leigh at Curly Girl Designs. She always says it just right! This goodie made a perfect gift for my 2 girlies as we are headed on our yearly road trip. We aren't going far this year.... Just far enough to be away, and leave the dads in charge for a night. Our plans? Sit, Eat, and Laugh... three things we do very well. Nothing beats good old fashioned girltime!

Souvenir Plates

I have been collecting souvenir state plates for a while now. It is pretty easy to find them while out junkin'. Some of my plates have been handed down to me from grandmothers... some remind me of places we have visited... and others are just too cute to pass up! I have a vision to cover a wall in them someday...

Last week, Mom and I shook things up in the booth. We added state plates to our plate rack wall. They are very colorful... not the "usual" for us... kind of kitschy ... but cute. (By the way... We put great prices on them!) Our new look makes us want to hit the road in search of an adventure! Pack your suitcase... It's road trip time!

Have you heard of the Bubble Guppies? Nope? You must not be between the ages of 2 and 5!

My kids love these cute colorful mermaid-like creatures and all their adventures. We don't get Nick Jr., so it is a treat to see episodes of the show when they visit their Memaw.

You might not be a preschooler - but chances are you have noticed that mermaids are all the rage right now. We fell more in love with these mythical beauties last year when we found Charlene's posts about her mermaid adventure in California. Amazing art, ladies! Since then, we have tried to snag everything mermaid for Booth 58. Recently, we included quite a few mermaid postcards.... quick sellers.

So... a great lesson to take home... Watch Nick Jr. more often.... You just never know what will be the next rage in vintage decor.... Mermaids now.... Dora and Diego later? yikes?

Wave a Flag

How are you and yours celebrating this year?

Come wave a flag in McKinney.... There will be a Hometown Parade in Downtown at 10 am on Monday. Our kids love the fire trucks! It always really feels like an old fashioned parade.... a fun way to say Happy Birthday America!

After the parade, have lunch on the square.... The Pantry , Spoons, and Sauce are three great family friendly spots that we like. Finish your afternoon at the Car Show and then some air conditioned shopping at the Antique Company Mall! You never know what "fireworks" you will find....

Our family has been spread out across the map .... Mr. and Mrs. 58 are at a friend's wedding in East Texas with my brother, sis-in-law and their 3 cuties. Brother will be Best Man and Niece #1 is the sweet flower girl.....

You think an outdoor East TX wedding in July will look like this? ha!

My family of 5 will be heading to other grandparents' house on the lake in Missouri. Big Brother and Sister are looking forward to fireworks. I hope we can stay awake until dark this year! We have plans for fishing and swimming and just relaxing.

Also found this display in Carolyn's booth (she always has the COOLEST stuff! I could spend hours just looking...).

Old black and white photos are always welcome in Booth 58. Mom and I feel like they add a little personality to our stuff. We use many of our own family's stash from decades ago... and we add new "friends" like these ...

LOVE these ....old bathing beauties sporting some swim attire from yester-year..... The one with the four girls makes me think of my girlfriends' getaway that is planned for July.... Can't wait! Our swimsuits are a little different now but, we are all in our "Mommy Years", so we're also quite modest!

Vintage Signs

Tried my hand at these this Father's Day weekend. While Hubby worked in the garage, I piddled some too..... he was sweet to help me cut some of the boards when my measuring didn't quite work out.

Dad made a "beach access" sign years ago that hangs by the pool now. We like to pretend!

I think the "groceries" sign is my fave. Love the old red paint.

I had a ball pulling these together from old barn wood that Mr. 58 brought me from the farm. I'm a bit nostalgic about these because they come from my childhood home, BUT I'm hoping someone will find them as "treasures" in the booth. There is plenty of old wood to go around.

Today we celebrate another important birthday…

Who can repurpose a dining room table, paint 5 picture frames, make 3 chalkboards, fix a barb wire fence, feed 30 head of cattle, make a fresh veggie omelet, and hit every garage sale in a 15 mile radius… all before 8 a.m.? Mr. 58! He can do it all!

Mom and I know Booth 58 would not be the same without him. He always has a positive attitude and pushes us the extra mile when we need it… or helps us to relax and have fun when we need it. He is the all around best partner we could ask for… he cooks, he cleans, he paints, he builds, he babysits…Like I said, he can do it all!

Happy Birthday Dad… You’re the Best! We all love you.

Long Live Vintage

I’m not naming names, but a certain Mrs. 58 had an important birthday this weekend.

The family celebrated her this weekend with some of her favorites… a chocolate pie from the Pantry, cold boiled shrimp, and a backyard pool party with her favorite little people... all of which think Grandmother is the best!

We surprised her with a few vintage themed gifts….

Vintage 1950's Airplane

We recently picked up this vintage 1950's hand made airplane from an estate sale. Mr. 58 had a nostalgic moment as he recalled that these little planes were very popular with the boys of his era. Like everyone else, he wanted one and bugged his folks until he got one. The plane had a real gas engine that powered the plane for about 5 minutes. It was attached to a long wire that you held as the plane went around and around and around......I'm getting dizzy. Yes, you stood in one spot going around and around until it ran out of fuel...... or you hurled! What fun!!! As best as he can recall, Mr. 58 said he only flew it once. Wonder why?

Have you noticed the trend too? We're trying to keep up in Booth 58... our shells have been big sellers last summer and this year too so far. It's hard to keep them around!

We've recently added a few handmade sea touches. Look for our starfish garlands, German glittered shells, gift tags with shells attached, some necklaces, vintage mermaid postcards and photos, and also the "shining sea" (glass glittered letters).. my fave right now!

Marine Rescue

As we celebrate Memorial Day, let us remember the veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice. We have a special place in our hearts for Marines, as our son is one. When we saw this old Marine languishing in the corner of a booth at Antique Company Mall, we just had to rescue him.

This water colored photo dated 1952 is of a proud young Marine just out of boot camp.
The inscription read "Always, Love Dad 1952". Did he serve in Korea? Viet Nam? Did he serve just a few years or make it a career?

We don't know his story, but one thing is sure. If he's still alive, he's in his 80's and he's still a proud Marine. Once a Marine always a Marine. As they say, Semper Fi!

Red, White, and Bikes

Bike the Bricks will be this Friday in Downtown McKinney. Amazing to watch! These cyclists get up to speeds of 40 mph around the Square. Fun for the whole family. Big Brother will be especially interested since he just took his training wheels off and is already the pro!

Yesterday we added some patriotic to Booth 58... complete with our own air show! Cool vintage toy airplane mom and dad found at an estate sale.... we've been waiting to fly it into the booth for some time.

School's (almost) Out for the Summer!

Well, the official countdown is on now.... 8 DAYS UNTIL SCHOOL IS OUT!!! Kindergarten is almost "history" to Big Brother. It has been a great year for him. He has learned so much. One of his favorites has been his art class.

One day while rearranging our booth, I recognized my son's art teacher...... Justin Preston. I introduced myself as one of his students' moms and then I found out he too is an ACM vendor. We have admired his repurposed mason jar lamps for some time and now we know the guy behind the magic. Truly art! Not your oridnary artist... this guy can also corral a classroom full of 5 year olds - with paint brushes! He deserves awards! Stop by the glass cases to see Justin's work. Great for Father's Day gifts.

Spent Friday bringing the beach to Booth 58. Added lots of shells and other found treasures. Also added a new table and a small cabinet with doors. Wall papered our back wall with vintage sheet music... looks cool!

Mr. 58 painted these terra cotta pots with chalkboard paint... cute addition to our mantle. I had herb names written on them... but now "She sells sea shells" is perfect on the 4 pots.

Love the blue mermaids I found. Great next to our vintage Florida juice glass.

Just this morning I heard my hubby say to my little ones, "I wish we were still at the beach."

Me too. Nothing like the sand between your toes!

We're back!

The Booth 58 Gang just spent a wonderful Mother's Day weekend on our annual family beach getaway. Fun was had by all.... Including Mr. 58 - pictured below with his two favorite Beach Ballerinas. The seaweed was a bit thicker than usual, but that didn't stop us from having a blast.

Mrs. 58's 6 grandkiddos gifted her with this beautiful beach themed bracelet..... Tracy at CremDeLaGems created it just for Mom... and it was PERFECT!

We've loaded up the truck and we are on our way back to Booth 58.. with "oceans of treasures". Stop by our corner of ACM to see what the tide washed up... We promise the seaweed won't be too bad!

Small Garage Sale

The other day, Mr. 58 and I were running errands when a sign nailed to a telephone pole caught my eye. It read "Small Garage Sale" with an arrow pointing down the street. Now this really got our curiosity up because who advertises a sale as small? Well, we found the house and saw an old door set on two chairs. There were a few items including one small silver trophy cup. When I showed interest in the ONE cup the seller commented that he had several more somewhere in the garage. Off he went and a few minutes later returned with six trophy cups dating back to the early 1900's. We were happy to take them off his hands.

We still cannot figure out why he thought describing his sale as small was a good idea but we're glad we stopped to take a look.

A Safe Place To Land

Looks like the Antique Company Mall is expecting a flurry of feathered friends this Spring. Bird cages seem to be the rage in home decorating. This large green one is ready for occupancy in our booth.

Dumpster Diving

Not too long ago we were visiting relatives in a nearby apartment complex. As we drove by a dumpster, something caught my eye. I spotted what appeared to be pieces of an old cabinet or bookcase peeking around from behind the dumpster. Upon closer examination we found part of a Globe-Wernicke sectional barrister bookcase from the 1920's. The bottom half of the piece was missing but the rest was in pretty good condition.

Mr. 58 checked around and found a man in Georgia who could reproduce the missing pieces at a very reasonable price. A trip to the glass store and a little stain job by Mr. 58 resulted in a wonderful vintage piece.

You just never know what will end up in a dumpster. Someone else's cast off became our treasure.

You Can't Keep It All

When Mr. 58 and I are shopping for the booth, we have a lot of things to consider. Will it compliment the look of the booth? Is it too big to fit in the booth? Can we get it at a good price? Will customers like it? Will it sell?

However, now and then we come across an item I really like and want to take home. It might work in the booth but I want it for the house. Mr. 58 sometimes has to remind me that I can't keep it all. We do however bend the rules somewhat when it comes to ironstone pitchers....

and brown transfer ware. I love both and have a hard time putting them in the booth. Much of the ironstone does make its way to the booth. Wish I could say the same for the brown dishes. This brown transfer ware bowl was quite unusual with a mother stirring a pot of soup as a little boy watches.

So now you know NOT to come to Booth 58 looking for brown transfer ware. It's probably at home where I can enjoy it every day.

Knew We Would Find One

During the Great Depression of the 1930's, many colleges tried to generate a little extra revenue through the sale of commemorative plates. These plates, made by Wedgwood, depicted campus buildings and scenes from the era and were sold in sets of twelve.

This ad ran in the Texas A&M yearbook, ironically called The Longhorn, in 1937.

Mr. 58 and I are both Aggies and have always wanted to have one of these vintage plates. They are quite rare and somewhat pricey. I've joked that maybe one day we'd find one at a garage sale. Not too long ago, we were browsing at a thrift store. Mr. 58 had gone one way and I another to check out the wares. I looked up and there stood Mr. 58 with a huge grin on his face and TWO Aggie plates in his hands. The best part was the price, $3 for both!!

They are displayed with pride in our home and one day will pass on to our children.

The Pantry has been a long time favorite of ours.... We've made it a habit of eating lunch there whenever we are on the Square. It is a great family friendly restuarant, a perfect place to meet a girlfriend for lunch, and the best spot to stop for a shopping break. The chocolate cream pie is a MUST!!!

The Pantry is being featured on FoodNetwork this Friday, April 22 at 9 pm. Outrageous Food filmed them in January building a 5 foot chocolate pie to feed local fire fighers, police, and military members. Set your DVRs... and then plan your escape to McKinney to come try the pie for yourself!

At a yard sale recently, I spotted a great piece of potential yard art. Mr. 58 identified it as a electric washing machine from the early 1900's...lots of gears, wheels and dangerous moving parts; cast iron with a copper wash tub. The tag said "$50-OBO". Our OBO (or best offer) of $35 was gladly accepted and the seller even offered to help load this 200 lb monster into the truck before we changed our minds.. When we did a little research, we were surprised to learn our little piece of yard art was a Apex Clothes Washer from 1917. It was worth 10 times our OBO. You just never know what OBO will get you. We got a great addition to the patio and the seller got rid of a lawn mowing obstacle.

A Little Dirt

Hello Spring! It is here! Have been attempting to introduce bits of spring in the booth over the past couple of weeks.

Found a cute idea on a new favorite blog .... Dear Lillie used moss to cover letters... Decided to buy some of this moss and play with it in the booth this weekend. Well, it turned out to be a bit messier than we expected. Ha! Nothing a little sweeping couldn't fix. And we think a little dirt never hurt!

Have also gotten a kick out these great little bitty peat pots. They have been a big seller. Fun to add little touches of the messy side of spring. Always good to get your hands dirty this time of year, anyway - right?

Today is Booth 58's Birthday!
A year ago today, we jumped into this adventure and we have loved every bit of it!

Come by Antique Company Mall today and help us celebrate.... We have made some special "birthday" markdowns. McKinney will be hosting the ArtWalk tonight and ACM will be staying open late... Over 150 artists will be showcasing their work throughout downtown . It should be a real treat. Be on the lookout for all the shops' frog planters outside their doors. My kids love spying the froggies whenever we are on the square.

Fun to look back today and remember all the "firsts" this year has brought us....We are having way too much fun!

Galvanized Anything

Many dealers sell only what they like. As a fairly new dealer, I asked for tips and frequently heard this, "Only sell what you would have in your home." Well, what I like doesn't sell and so I have begun to search the magazines and blogs for the latest craze. And have found that it is anything "galvanized"....bucket, pail, tote, container, or basket. Mop buckets seem to be very popular...you know the kind with the wooden wringer part at the top. It just reminds me of something the school custodian used when mopping up after some sick kindergartner.

There is one dealer at ACM who specializes in galvanized goodies. She has a lovely display of garden items and I purchased two of her large oval tubs, put them on my patio and filled them with geraniums. But I would still like to sell my mop bucket that sits in Booth 58, just can't quit thinking about it's past life....somehow even geraniums can't redeem its original purpose.

PB turned it over, upside down, and set it in a book case as an accent piece.. on the cover of the magazine! "You never know what someone will buy" - We say that often when hunting for treasures to add to the booth. Last year we used empty egg crates to add some interesting texture to our shelves. To our surprise, we received a call from the mall one day asking us if we would sell them to a customer! Seriously? wow! So, this week we added more...with pricetags this time!

Round Top Treasures

On a whim, Mr. 58 and I decided to make a quick trip over to the fields at Warrenton yesterday. So many fellow bloggers across the country wish they could make this trip and for us it is too easy....just an hour drive along the backroads of central Texas where we live. We left home in the morning and were at our first stop by 10:30..an old dance hall that serves as an antique venue..La Bahai. We attended a wedding reception a few years ago in the same spot. It is a graceful white frame building, wood floors, with large screened windows on all sides. And it sits right in the middle of a pasture surrounded by large oak trees. I remember the night of the wedding, walking through the pasture in my high heels, trying to avoid the mud puddles from a recent rain.

Next stop were the fields at Warrenton...We parked in a cow pasture and hiked the highway to our favorite spots, ate a barbeque sandwich, and visited with many of the dealers from around the country. Theresa from Garden Antiques Vintage, a fellow ACM dealer, had set up outside of Zapp Hall. Loved her ironstone displays and especially the "living room" with red wagon coffee table and wonderful framed flag print. It was a gorgeous day, and after several trips back and forth to dump our stuff in the truck we decided to head home.

Among the many piles of burlap and rust I picked out some ceiling tiles, silver and ironstone to add to Booth 58. So fun to spend the day with fellow junk hunters, in my own backyard!

Wish we were there!

While Mr. and Mrs. 58 are roaming the fields in Roundtop today, Little Mr. 58 and I decided to fluff the booth. It seemed a bit lonely at ACM, but we enjoyed our "date!"

Mom and I made these eggs out of old hymns. We called them "Song Bird Eggs" and then our little helper thought "Hummingbird Eggs" was better. Clever boy!

Come look for some of the touches of spring throughout Booth 58 and the rest of Antique Company Mall.

Little Red Riding Hood Meets the Dutch Girl

Do you ever wish you knew the history of the treasures you find? The people who chose them originally...who used them and maybe loved them? In an earlier post I wrote about my love of old plates and the "need" to bring them home and "rescue" them from an unknown fate...like becoming a dog dish or even eternity in the city dump. (Now, you know lots of people use little transferware bowls for their pets, especially cats..that's why we always use a little clorox in our dish water before we serve our family on our new vintage ware.)

Recently, I came across a sweet Dutch Girl cookie jar. She sat among a collection of other Dutch ceramic children, obviously once loved by someone. I could not bring all the children home, so just adopted the one and introduced her to Little Red Riding Hood, who lives in my kitchen.

Now Red Riding Hood does have a history that I know all about. My mother bought her for her mother during WWII. They lived in Miami, Florida and my mom was a war bride, waiting for my dad to return from the Navy. Yesterday, I asked my ninety year old mom to tell me the story again. She said she bought the cookie jar and carried it home on the bus, along with some red checked curtains. She and her sister were "re-doing" Mom's kitchen. (Imagine that, DIY make-overs were popular in the 40's!) She also told me that the cookie jar never held cookies. Her mother did not bake cookies. My mother was one of seven children and there never would have been enough cookies to go around. Her mother only made huge cobblers and sheet cakes that would feed the five boys and two girls.

My mom inherited the jar and it never held cookies in our house either...she just sat quietly in the corner of the kitchen and added a little cheer to the many homes that I grew up in. Now she sits on the countertop at my house, and I found out she is way too valuable to risk putting cookies in!

So Red Riding Hood has a legacy that will hopefully be cherished by my children and grandchildren. And she won't end up being sold in a yard sale, like her friend the Dutch Girl. Now I've gotten all sentimental about the Dutch Girl...how am I ever going to put her in Booth 58?

It Just Takes Time

Early morning is the best time to hit the streets in search of yard sale signs. My husband is the morning person, so he laughs when I actually get up before him and put the coffee on. By 7:15 we are in the truck searching for the elusive sign.... huge sale, estate sale, garage sale, yard sale....

Found a wonderful crate of clocks at a yard sale recently...just as the man was unloading them. A whole box of ancient kitchen clocks in shades of green, red and cream. You never know what you will find. This week I cleaned up a few and put them in the booth to add a splash of color to my Valentine's display.

Climbing in and out of the truck, driving up and down the streets, loading and rearranging treasures, it all just takes time and perseverance. And some days it all pays off. Other days we come up empty handed and head to Sonic for breakfast burritos, knowing that next weekend the hunt probably will be better.

Orphan Plates

Although china has not been a great seller for Booth 58, I cannot pass up a deal on a sweet dish. Plate, platters, and pieces of transferware are everywhere in my own home. Hung in most rooms, filling cabinets, holding odds and ends, everywhere you look are the signs of my obsession with plates. When I find a lonely, orphan piece at a tag sale, or Goodwill, I cannot leave it. In my mind, I try to justify why it needs to come home with me. Some of my friends have said it is O.K. to have sets of different dishes for different seasons..like fall dishes, ones for summer. But I am talking about just stray dishes, no mates, no way they will ever be a set. I am like a dish rescuer...it needs a home.

Now I am very picky about my dishes. They have to appeal to me, or be a piece of an obscure set I have started to collect...like my Homer Laughlin Valentine dishes, white with red trim and pastel flowers.
What? You didn't know it was O.K. to have Valentine dishes? Well, of course, it is. And I found the sugar bowl at a church rummage sale this past weekend....for fifty cents.

Scare on the Square

Mark you calendars for Friday, October 29th, 4-6 pm. Each year historic downtown McKinney hosts "Scare on the Square", a safe time for young children to dress up and visit the shopkeepers for treats. The streets are closed and the children can parade around town, collecting as many goodies as they can carry. In the past I have made the circuit accompanied by my own cowboys,a monkey, Mickey Mouse, several delightful fairies, a ballerina, and Buzz Lightyear. This year you will find me with a different crew ages 5,4,3,2, and new. We start out at 4 o'clock because it gets very crowded, very quickly. It is a delightful time to enjoy the streets of downtown with your own little goblins...or just come along and enjoy mine! Antique Company Mall will probably be open late that night..stop in and say hi.

Booth 58's New Helper

Another grandson has joined the entourage of little helpers at Booth 58. Although he hasn't ventured out to the Antique Company Mall yet, his brother and sister have pitched in to help out with the fluffing, restocking and sweeping. The grandparents are amazed at what cheerful helpers we have had the past two weeks, when they have accompanied us to the booth. Oldest Grandson loved helping sweep up the " paint crumbs" that appeared after moving the vintage furniture around. Granddaughter "fluffed" the pumpkin dolls in a little white rocker and serenaded customers with her lullabies. It won't be long before number 3 joins us in the fun! Welcome Aboard, little one....

Mini Marburger

I won't be making it to Round Top for the Fall Antique Show this time around since we are waiting on Baby Brother to make his debut any day now. Mom and Sis-in-Law plan to make a trip down next week and visit all of you. So sad that I won't be there, but probably best....the fields aren't the ideal birthing location!

To make up for it, we will take part in our own "Mini Marburger" this weekend in McKinney. Octoberfest 2010 starts this afternoon and runs through tomorrow night.... food, fun, and festivities... all celebrating our German heritage. Mr.58 took a peak on the Square this morning and noticed vendors beginning to set up tents and tables. We're planning on heading up this afternoon to eat some sausage and listen to some good music. The kids are hoping for a train ride!

Antique Company Mall is hosting the Munich Antique Faire out on East Virginia Street. Some of our fellow dealers will set up outside while many others are holding great sales inside. We are having our very own Booth 58 "Happpy Fall Yall Sale." We made a bunch of mark downs in the booth yesterday.... Hope some of yall can head over and take a look.

Pumpkin Sightings

Haven't seen any real pumpkins in the store yet... but I have had a few other recent "sightings" that make me soooo happy!

I know,I know... quick bread from a box mix is cheating to many of you.... but I really appreciate the quick part of this yummy bread!
Thank you Starbucks and Pillsbury for the "happy return" of these treats each year this time.

One steamy August afternoon Mom and I "baked" up these "pumpkin spice muffins" and put them in this rusty vintage muffin tin.... That is our kind of "baking!"

It's Legal!

We decided that it is "legal" to say it's fall now. September 1st means fall! Yesterday, we took out the shells and added the pumpkins ... and it felt so wonderful. Fall is our favorite.

I read a blog post this morning that asked the question, "Are you sad to see summer go?" HA!!! Those of us here in the Texas are all answering that quickly... "No way! Bring on the fall!!!!"

Mom and I heard several comments from customers and other dealers as they watched us sprinkling our fall wares around Booth 58...All of them sounded inspired and excited ...We told them, "It's legal! It's September 1st!!!!" A few even tried to buy our display only punkins' they were so inspired!

Speaking of "punkins" -Our fall brings us the joy of adding our new Little Punkin' to the family.... so fluffing the booth will have to take a backseat to a few more naps for this mama. Why not get a jumpstart on this festive season... Bring on the Fall!

What would we do without Mr. 58?

When on a whim, Elizabeth and I decided to rent the booth, Mr.58 jumped right in. He has become the ultimate repurposer, refinisher, truck driver and treasure picker. He sacrificed his garden this spring and instead polished his skills in the paint department. The heifer shed, located in the pasture, became the workshop and even his bulls seem amazed at his new found proficiency with a can of spray paint. You can find them standing at the door or gazing in the window as he turns the latest find into a piece of inventory.

He has become very sharp at choosing the chippy, tarnished, stained piece, even if he says he still doesn't "get it"! Last weekend at a rummage sale he went to the left while I went to the right. When we met at the check-out he claimed the prize..he had found an ironstone teapot and a large tarnished tray....We couldn't do it without Mr. 58.

Time 4 School

This morning as I fluffed our cluttered corner at ACM a bit, I added a white creamer with bright yellow pencils and wrote on a little chalkboard "Time 4 School." A beach theme still sticks around our booth, but my mind is onto a new season.... Back to School!

I sent my first little one off to kindergarten this week. What a milestone! I even made it through Monday morning with only a few tears. Big day for our family. Our little guy seems like a big man now... This mama is proud!

His biggest discovery to share on day one : "Mom, guess what.... If you don't bring your lunch from home, you can buy your lunch in the cafeteria! The boy that bought his lunch today got a corndog... Can you believe that??? But he had peas on his plate too, so I think I would rather you keep packing my lunch."

I asked Mom to share a few of her "vintage" back to school memories....

Peggy's school day memories from 1958...In the second grade little girls wore handmade or hand-me-down dresses and leather shoes with straps. I always longed for brown leather penny loafer, just like the big girls.

And the blisters.... new shoes rub the back of your heels and I remember the Band-Aids..it took weeks to break in those new shoes.

My lunch box was the same shape as you imagine construction workers carry. It was painted like a little red roofed cottage and the thermos, which had real glass, was held in the roof part with a little hinge.

Inside Mom would tuck a bologna sandwich, some potato sticks (that came in a can), and a cookie all wrapped in wax paper. On Mondays I might get a cold fried chicken leg instead of a sandwich. Mom could make one chicken cooked for Sunday dinner stretch a long way!

Now, I am off to carpool line.... Eager to hear about what new discovery today brings!

So Long Summer

We're packing away our pool floaties and pulling out our new backpacks around here..... Filling our new pencil box and counting our crayons and markers....

Speaking of pencil boxes.... look at this fun surprise Mom found while junkin' last week.... This old cigar box was one of her finds, and when she got home she discovered it was full of treasures... baby photos, class pictures, letters, newspaper clippings... all from the 1920's and 30's. You just never know what you'll find!

Road Trip

Baby Scootin'

Got some great inspiration from Carolyn B's booths this week. I am scootin' things around our big kids' room to make room for Baby #3 joining us this fall. We are moving Sister in with Big Brother and we are in desperate need of adding some feminine touches to the already vintage cowboy room. Loved Carolyn's cowgirl puzzle collection and other girlie goodies in her upstairs booth. She always finds the coolest stuff to gather together.

Baby Brother will have a vintage nursery with extra touches of natical themed decor. Have been eyeing this display all summer... cute!

Will be using some heritage prints of our little guy's great grandfathers in their service uniforms. Hoping it will all come together super cute. Thanks for the jump start, Carolyn!

Fluffing

Mom and I spent the afternoon "fluffing" our booth yesterday while Mr. 58 babysat for us. Despite the 103 degree August afternoon, we stayed cool inside and had a sweet couple of hours together. We always have such a great time rearranging our goodies, chatting with other vendors, and also meeting strolling customers.

Yesterday, we dubbed Nancy of Ella Elaine, our "Booth Fairy" as she confessed to frequently "fluffing" for us when our booth needs some help. Thanks, Nancy. (Here is a recent post where she showed off some of our treasures.) Nancy has such a touch. Her booths are always gorgeous... here are a few of the treats we spotted that made us smile....

Was fun to meet Cindy of Yapping Cat Studio and some of her other Paper Cow Girl Blog Girlfriends. Always great to see girlfriends on a roadtrip laughing and soaking up time together. Nice meeting you gals!

The Cluttered Corner

Mom and I are having too much fun shifting our clutter around our new booth downstairs. This afternoon, I was working in the booth and was very grateful for our taller ceiling and bit cooler air. Early this spring, upstairs was a perfect place for us to "dip our toes in" so to speak... in this adventure.
